What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are very thin shells, usually made of porcelain or resin, bonded to the front of your teeth to enhance the appearance of your smile. With dental veneers, you can achieve a beautiful, natural-looking smile you will want to show off.
What are dental veneers used for?
Our dentist may recommend dental veneers to correct several smile imperfections or if you would like to improve the overall appearance of your smile. Custom-made veneers can be used for just one tooth or for your entire smile.
We may suggest veneers to:
- Close large spaces and gaps between teeth
- Whiten severely stained or discolored teeth
- Improve the appearance of irregularly shaped teeth
- Correct slightly crooked teeth
- Restore broken, chipped, worn or fractured teeth
What are the benefits of dental veneers?
- They are made from durable materials to keep your smile strong
- They are custom-made to fit your individual smile
- They match the natural appearance of tooth enamel to blend seamlessly with your smile
- They are stain resistant to keep your smile bright and white for many years
What is the process for veneers like?
At our office, we work with each patient individually to give them a smile they have always wanted. We consider all aspects of your smile, from the shape and color of your teeth to your skin tone and facial structure to ensure that your veneers will blend perfectly in with your smile and face. During your consultation, we will discuss veneer options with you and help you decide if they are the right solution for you.
To prepare a tooth for a dental veneer, our dentist will reshape the tooth surface, which will be equal to the thickness of the veneer. Our dentist will then make an impression of your tooth or teeth. This impression is sent out to a dental lab where the dental veneers will be made. It may take a few weeks for the veneers to come back from the dental lab. You may be given temporary dental veneers to use while you wait.
After the veneers are created, you will come back to our office to get them bonded to your teeth. Our dentist will place the veneer on your tooth to examine its fit and color, and he may trim or adjust the veneer to make sure it fits your tooth seamlessly before it is permanently cemented to your tooth. Your tooth will be cleaned, polished and etched to preparation for the veneer. Etching allows for a strong bonding between the tooth and the veneer. A special cement is applied to the veneer before it is placed on your tooth. Once the veneer is properly positioned, the cement will harden, creating a bond between the tooth and veneer. After the bonding, our team will remove any excess cement, check your bite and make any last-needed adjustments.
How long do veneers last?
After receiving your dental veneers, it is important to practice good oral hygiene to protect your teeth and veneers. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and visit us for regular checkups and cleanings. Veneers are known to last for up to 20 years with the proper care.
